The Nature of Mankind

Allah (swt) has eloquently described many things in Quran. One of which is a man in whose heart the Iman is feeble or a man whose heart is empty of true Iman. The only way to alleviate oneself in nobility and grace in this life is to work on our Iman as suggested by these Ayats -

اِنَّ الۡاِنۡسَانَ خُلِقَ هَلُوۡعًا ۙ‏ اِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزُوۡعًا ۙ‏ وَاِذَا مَسَّهُ الۡخَيۡرُ مَنُوۡعًا ۙ‏ اِلَّا الۡمُصَلِّيۡنَۙ‏ الَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ عَلٰى صَلَاتِهِمۡ دَآئِمُوۡنَۙ وَالَّذِيۡنَ فِىۡۤ اَمۡوَالِهِمۡ حَقٌّ مَّعۡلُوۡمٌۙ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَالۡمَحۡرُوۡمِۙ وَالَّذِيۡنَ يُصَدِّقُوۡنَ بِيَوۡمِ الدِّيۡنِۙ‏ وَالَّذِيۡنَ هُمۡ مِّنۡ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِمۡ مُّشۡفِقُوۡنَ​ۚ‏


Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; And niggardly when good touches him.Except those who are devoted to Salat (prayers). Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); And those in whose wealth there is a recognised right. For the beggar who asks, and for the unlucky who has lost his property and wealth, (and his means of living has been straitened). And those who believe in the Day of Recompense. And those who fear the torment of their Lord. (Surah Al-Ma'arij, 70:19-27)


In the following ayaat we will study the ideal character that is required of a Muslim. Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala says, “Verily, man was created very impatient,” (70:19). He goes on to explain this statement, “Irritable when evil touches him,” (70:20) whenever any harm touches him he is frightful and worried; completely taken back due to the severity of its terror and hopeless about receiving any goodness after it, “And niggardly when good touches him,” (70:21). When a little bit of good comes his way, he becomes extremely stingy and holds it away from the people not sharing with them. It is recorded from Abu Huraira radhiAllahu ‘anhu through a long chain of narrators that the Prophet salAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said,


شَرُّ مَا فِي رَجُلٍ: شُحٌّ هَالِعٌ وَجُبْنٌ خَالِع

“The worst thing that can be in a man is greedy impatience and unrestrained cowardice.”


It is man’s nature to be impatient but when he adopts righteousness and has Taqwa he begins to display patience. This means Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala is not to be blamed for creating man impatient rather it’s a test. Man has to rise above base desires and feelings and become a model of high moral character. A person’s performing the salat necessarily implies that he believes in Allah, His Messenger (peace be upon him), His Book and the Hereafter as well as tries to act according to his belief. That is, no laziness or love of ease and comfort, no occupation or interest hinders them from being punctual and regular at the prayer. When the Prayer time comes, they abandon every occupation and activity and stand up to perform worship of their God. Another meaning which Uqbah bin Amir has given of ala salat-i-him daaimun is that they perform the Prayer with full peace of mind, tranquility and humility; they do not try to offer the Prayer in a hurry in order to get rid of it somehow, nor think irrelevant things during the Prayer. “Who believe in the Day of Recompense”: Who do not think they are irresponsible but believe that one Day they will have to appear before their God and render to Him an account of their deeds. In other words, they are not like the disbelievers, who do not fear God even after they have committed every heinous sin and crime and perpetrated every cruelty in the world, but they, in spite of having adopted a righteous attitude in morals and deeds as best as they could, fear God and continue to remain in constant awe lest their shortcomings should exceed their good works before Him and they should be declared as worthy of punishment.


As mentioned in the Quran, Surah Al Fajr, 89:15-20; The people are defined by their reactions to changing of situations, and Allah is the Maalik who controls all situations. Lets us read ayat that demonstrate for us the changes in a man as he faces changing situation.


فَاَمَّا الۡاِنۡسَانُ اِذَا مَا ابۡتَلٰٮهُ رَبُّهٗ فَاَكۡرَمَهٗ وَنَعَّمَهٗ  ۙ فَيَقُوۡلُ رَبِّىۡۤ اَكۡرَمَنِؕ وَاَمَّاۤ اِذَا مَا ابۡتَلٰٮهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيۡهِ رِزۡقَهٗ ۙ فَيَقُوۡلُ رَبِّىۡۤ اَهَانَنِ​ۚ‏ كَلَّا​ بَلۡ لَّا تُكۡرِمُوۡنَ الۡيَتِيۡمَۙ‏ وَلَا تَحٰٓضُّوۡنَ عَلٰى طَعَامِ الۡمِسۡكِيۡنِۙ‏ وَتَاۡكُلُوۡنَ التُّرَاثَ اَكۡلًا لَّـمًّا ۙ وَّتُحِبُّوۡنَ الۡمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا ؕ


As for man, when his Lord tests him by exalting him and bestowing His bounties upon him, he says: “My Lord has exalted me.” But when He tests him by straitening his sustenance, he says: “My Lord has humiliated me.” But no; you do not treat the orphan honourably, and do not urge one another to feed the poor, and greedily devour the entire inheritance, and love the riches, loving them ardently.


Man has a very materialistic view of life. He regards the wealth and position and power of this world alone as everything. When he has it, he is filled with pride and says God has honored me; and when he fails to obtain it, he says: God has humiliated me. Thus, the criterion of honor and humiliation in his sight is the possession of wealth and position and power, or the absence of it, whereas the truth which he does not understand is that whatever Allah has given anybody in the world has been given for the sake of a trial. If he has given him wealth and power, it has been given for a trial to see whether he becomes grateful for it, or commits ingratitude. If he has made him poor, in this too there is a trial for him to see whether he remains content and patient in the will of God and faces his hardships bravely within permissible bounds, or becomes ready to transgress every limit of morality and honesty and starts cursing his God.


And in Surah Hud, ayah 8-11 we have another demonstration of how a person reacts to changing times.


وَلَـئِنۡ اَخَّرۡنَا عَنۡهُمُ الۡعَذَابَ اِلٰٓى اُمَّةٍ مَّعۡدُوۡدَةٍ لَّيَـقُوۡلُنَّ مَا يَحۡبِسُهٗؕ اَلَا يَوۡمَ يَاۡتِيۡهِمۡ لَـيۡسَ مَصۡرُوۡفًا عَنۡهُمۡ وَحَاقَ بِهِمۡ مَّا كَانُوۡا بِهٖ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُوۡنَ وَلَـئِنۡ اَذَقۡنَا الۡاِنۡسَانَ مِنَّا رَحۡمَةً ثُمَّ نَزَعۡنٰهَا مِنۡهُ​ۚ اِنَّهٗ لَيَـُٔوۡسٌ كَفُوۡرٌ وَلَـئِنۡ اَذَقۡنٰهُ نَـعۡمَآءَ بَعۡدَ ضَرَّآءَ مَسَّتۡهُ لَيَـقُوۡلَنَّ ذَهَبَ السَّيِّاٰتُ عَنِّىۡ​ ؕ اِنَّهٗ لَـفَرِحٌ فَخُوۡرٌۙ‏ اِلَّا الَّذِيۡنَ صَبَرُوۡا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِؕ اُولٰٓـئِكَ لَهُمۡ مَّغۡفِرَةٌ وَّاَجۡرٌ كَبِيۡرٌ


And if We delay the torment for them till a determined term, they are sure to say, "What keeps it back?" Verily, on the day it reaches them, nothing will turn it away from them, and they will be surrounded by (or fall in) that at which they used to mock! And if We give man a taste of Mercy from Us, and then withdraw it from him, verily! he is despairing, ungrateful. But if We let him taste good (favour) after evil (poverty and harm) has touched him, he is sure to say: "Ills have departed from me." Surely, he is exultant, and boastful (ungrateful to Allah). Except those who show patience and do righteous good deeds: those, theirs will be forgiveness and a great reward (Paradise).


And in Surah Yunus, ayah 12 we have an example of how a man’s situation changes him.


وَاِذَا مَسَّ الۡاِنۡسَانَ الضُّرُّ دَعَانَا لِجَنۡۢبِهٖۤ اَوۡ قَاعِدًا اَوۡ قَآئِمًا ۚ فَلَمَّا كَشَفۡنَا عَنۡهُ ضُرَّهٗ مَرَّ كَاَنۡ لَّمۡ يَدۡعُنَاۤ اِلٰى ضُرٍّ مَّسَّهٗ​ؕ كَذٰلِكَ زُيِّنَ لِلۡمُسۡرِفِيۡنَ مَا كَانُوۡا يَعۡمَلُوۡنَ‏


And when harm touches man, he invokes Us, lying on his side, or sitting or standing. But when We have removed his harm from him, he passes on as if he had never invoked Us for a harm that touched him! Thus it is made fair-seeming to the Musrifun that which they used to do.


Abdullah b. Amr b. al-'As reported that he heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Verily, the hearts of all the sons of Adam are between the two fingers out of the fingers of the Compassionate Lord as one heart. He turns that to any (direction) He likes. Then Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: 0 Allah, the Turner of the hearts, turn our hearts to Thine obedience. (Reference : Sahih Muslim 2655; Book 46, Hadith 29; Book 33, Hadith 6418)

حَدَّثَنِي زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، وَابْنُ، نُمَيْرٍ كِلاَهُمَا عَنِ الْمُقْرِئِ، قَالَ زُهَيْرٌ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ، اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْمُقْرِئُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو هَانِئٍ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحُبُلِيَّ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ، يَقُولُ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏"‏ إِنَّ قُلُوبَ بَنِي آدَمَ كُلَّهَا بَيْنَ إِصْبَعَيْنِ مِنْ أَصَابِعِ الرَّحْمَنِ كَقَلْبٍ وَاحِدٍ يُصَرِّفُهُ حَيْثُ يَشَاءُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم

"‏ اللَّهُمَّ مُصَرِّفَ الْقُلُوبِ صَرِّفْ قُلُوبَنَا عَلَى طَاعَتِكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏


Let us remember that everything is by measure decided and decreed by Allah (swt) and Allah (swt) directs the hearts as He (swt) wills. Rest Allah knows the best.
